The Declaration of Independence was approved by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. But, it was not signed until almost a month later. The Congress did not have the approval of all 13 colonies until July 9, 1776.

The actual signing finally took place on August 2, 1776.

John Hancock was president of the Second Continental Congress when the Declaration of Independence was adopted and signed.

He signed large and stylish signature on the US Declaration of Independence. Hancock sign largely and so clearly that King George could read it without his spectacles.

His sign "John Hancock" has become a synonym in the United States for one's signature.

On April 21, 1862, John Hancock Life Insurance Company was established and named in honor of John Hancock.
