Giovanni Antonio Canal was born on 18 October 1697 in Venice. He is commonly known as Canaletto.
He was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice. He was considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.
His father "Bernardo Canal" was also a painter, which explains why he was known as 'Canaletto', meaning 'little canal'.
Giovanni Paolo inspired him. He started painting the daily life of the city and its people.
